Light and airy summer home

There is something magical about summer light. The way it flows into a room, softens everything, and turns any space into a light and airy summer home — that warm, fresh feeling we all long for this time of year.

I am lucky enough to experience this every single morning. Our home is surrounded by garden on almost every side — behind the living room, beside both bedrooms, and beyond that our neighbour’s garden stretches out into more green. No matter which window I look through, nature is right there waiting. And every morning, the first thing I do is draw back the curtains and let the summer light come flooding in. That simple moment changes everything about how the day begins.

If you love creating a home that feels calm, fresh and connected to the season — here are 5 simple ways to bring that summery feeling into your space, wherever you live and whatever your view looks like. 🌿

In summer, one of the first things I do is swap out the heavier textiles for something softer and lighter — and I try to do this every year. Think linen cushion covers, cotton throws, or gauzy curtains that let the daylight filter through beautifully rather than blocking it.

It doesn’t have to be a big change. A new cushion cover in a natural linen texture, crisp summer bedlinen, or simply moving a lighter throw to the sofa can instantly shift the feeling of a room from heavy and wintery to fresh and summery.

You don’t need to redo everything — just a few simple swaps make a surprisingly big difference.

If you are ready to make this swap, here are a few of my favourites:

A simple linen cushion cover — the easiest single swap to bring a summery feeling to your sofa link

A lightweight linen throw that adds texture and warmth without feeling heavylink

Fresh, light summer bedlinen that makes your bedroom feel instantly more airy and seasonallink

To create a calm, summery atmosphere I always come back to the same soft tones — white, warm beige, linen, muted grey. These colors don’t fight with the light, they work with it, reflecting the sunshine beautifully and giving any room that fresh, airy feeling.

Sometimes I add a small pop of color — a vase in dusty pink, a cushion in soft sage green or a simple bowl in warm terracotta. But I always keep it gentle. Colors you would find in a summer garden, not on a paint chart. 🌿

The beauty of a natural color palette in summer is that nature outside your window does all the bold, colorful work for you. Your home just needs to be calm enough to let it in.

nature in home

This is one of my favourite summer rituals — and honestly something I do all year round. I almost always have flowers or branches somewhere in my home. Sometimes I buy them, sometimes I simply cut whatever is growing in the garden that week. And last year I found some artificial flowers that look so incredibly natural that I still reach out to touch them sometimes just to check!

Even a single branch in a vase, a small bunch of wildflowers on the kitchen table, or a few fresh herbs from the garden adds something that no decoration can replicate — life, softness and that connection to nature that makes a home feel genuinely alive.

For me, greenery gives my home a feeling of quiet luxury. Fresh, happy and grounded. And in summer, when nature outside is at its most generous, there is really no excuse not to bring some of it inside. 🌿

A few of my favourite pieces for bringing nature inside: 🌿

A generous, earthy flowerpot in the softest sand tone — perfect for bringing a living, breathing touch of nature insidelink

A delicate cream peony bouquet that looks so naturally beautiful, you will forget it is artificial link

A beautiful ceramic vase that turns a single branch or stem into a moment of quiet natural beautylink

Scented candle

The first thing I do every summer morning — even before lighting a candle or styling a single surface — is open the windows. Because no matter how beautiful your home smells, if there is no fresh air flowing through it, something always feels a little off. Fresh air is the foundation of a good-smelling home. Everything else comes after.

Once the windows are open and the breeze is moving through the rooms, I love to add a little extra layer of scent with a natural candle. In summer I always reach for lighter, fresher scents — citrus for energy and brightness, jasmine for that soft floral summer feeling, or lavender when I want the home to feel calm and restful.

Keep it light though. Summer scent should feel like something you almost don’t notice — just a gentle reminder that the season is here. 🌿

Most people put away their lamp thoughts when summer arrives — and in Denmark I completely understand why. When the sun doesn’t set until almost 11 o’clock at night, it is easy to forget that lighting even matters this time of year.

But lighting isn’t only for the darker months. The right lamp creates mood even on a bright summer evening — and I have been experimenting with a few new lamps lately and I am surprised how much they add, especially when placed in corners or used with soft warm bulbs.

This is also why portable lamps have become so popular in recent years — and for very good reason. A beautiful cordless lamp gives you soft, mood-creating light wherever you need it. On the garden table on a warm summer evening. In a cozy corner as the long day finally winds down.

If you are unsure where to start, go for a table lamp with a warm tone, or try placing one near a chair or in a hallway to create those little quiet islands of calm that make a summer evening at home feel truly special. 🌿

A few portable lamps I love — beautiful both inside and out on a summer evening:

A design icon in portable form — this Verner Panton classic brings both light and personality wherever you place itlink

A sculptural brass table lamp that brings warm, elegant light to any corner of your homelink

Your home should reflect the way you want to feel. For me, summer is all about slowing down, letting the light and air in, and surrounding myself with simple, beautiful things that make me happy — fresh flowers from the garden, a light linen throw, an open window and the sound of the garden outside.

You don’t need to redecorate. You don’t need to buy everything new. Just a few small, intentional changes can completely shift the feeling of your home from heavy and closed to light, fresh and summery.

I hope these 5 simple ideas inspire you to bring that summery feeling into your space this season. And if you try any of them — I would love to hear about it. Leave a comment or find me on Instagram. 🌿
