For a long time, my living and dining area looked pretty. I had two separate vitrines and a commode — one in the living room, one in the dining room. Functional enough, and not bad looking at all. On the long wall between the two spaces I had styled a beautiful corner — a big mirror, a bench, a chair, a lamp, a plant. It looked like something from a magazine.

But after a while, something started to bother me.

That corner was never actually used. Nobody sat on that bench. The mirror just reflected an empty room. It was beautiful — but it was a showroom, not a home. And I had learned enough about Scandinavian design by then to know the difference. In a Scandi home, everything has a purpose. A home is not a display — it is a living space, used and loved by the people inside it.

So I made a decision. I removed both vitrines, the commode, and the entire styled corner. And in their place I put one large bookshelf along that long wall.

It changed everything.

The upper shelves are open — for books, vases, ceramics and the objects that tell our story. The lower half has doors — hiding the everyday clutter that belongs in a home but doesn’t need to be seen. My china finally has a beautiful home. The room feels more sophisticated, more calm, more intentional. And most importantly — it actually works for our daily life.

In this post I want to share what I learned from that one change — and give you some practical tips for styling your bookshelf that is both beautiful and functional. Because sometimes the biggest transformation in a home comes from the most overkommelig decision. 🌿

“Before we dive into the tips — here are some of my favourite pieces for creating a beautiful, personal bookshelf:” 🌿

1.Start with function — beauty will follow

Before you think about styling, think about purpose. The most common bookshelf mistake I see is treating it purely as a display — filling it with beautiful objects that look good but serve no real function in daily life.

The Scandinavian approach is different. Every shelf, every object, every decision starts with the question: does this actually belong in our life? My own bookshelf holds my books, my china, my ceramics, my vases — things we use and love every day. The lower cabinets hide the practical clutter that belongs in a home but doesn’t need to be seen.

When function comes first, beauty follows naturally. And the result is a bookshelf that feels genuinely alive — not just styled. 🌿

2.Choose a color palette that connects to your whole home

If every book stands upright in a straight row, the shelf can feel a bit rigid. A little variation instantly softens the look.

When I style my bookshelf from IKea, I am very specific about color. Not because I follow strict rules — but because a bookshelf is one of the most visible things in a room, and everything on it needs to feel connected to the rest of the home.
I choose my books, vases, lamps and accessories in the same color palette I use throughout my living space. Warm neutrals, soft browns, matte blacks, natural whites. Nothing that suddenly jumps out and breaks the flow.
The result is a bookshelf that feels like it belongs — not like a big shelf standing alone in the corner doing its own thing. When your eye moves from the sofa to the shelf to the dining table and everything speaks the same quiet language, the whole room feels more calm, more considered, more intentional.
Your bookshelf doesn’t need to match everything perfectly. It just needs to feel like it comes from the same home. 🌿pth. Think rhythm, not symmetry.

3. Mix heights and directions — create rhythm, not rows

A bookshelf where every book stands upright in a straight row can feel a little rigid and flat. The moment you start varying heights and directions, something shifts — the shelf comes alive.

When I style my bookshelf, I think of it the same way I think about layering a room. Some books stand tall, others lie flat and become a little platform for a vase or a small object on top. A tall ceramic next to a low bowl. A lamp that rises above everything else. Objects placed slightly in front of each other to create depth.

This variation is what makes a bookshelf exciting to look at — your eye moves naturally from one level to the next, always finding something new. Not chaotic, but not rigid either. Just alive.

Think rhythm, not symmetry. That is the difference between a shelf that looks styled and one that feels styled. 🌿

4. Group your accessories in odd numbers

This is one of my favourite rules from interior design — and one of the simplest ways to instantly change the whole feeling of a shelf.

Group your objects in odd numbers. Three. Five. Seven. Never two, never four. It sounds almost too simple, but the difference is immediately visible. Odd numbers create a natural focal point — your eye finds a center and settles there. Even numbers create tension, like the shelf is waiting for something to complete it.

On my own bookshelf I always group in threes. A tall vase, a medium ceramic object and a small decorative piece. Or three stacked books with a single object on top. The grouping pulls everything together and gives the shelf a collected, considered look — like it was styled with intention, not just filled.

Try it with what you already have. Move things into groups of three and step back. You will feel the difference immediately. 🌿

5. Add greenery — it brings the whole shelf to life

No space feels truly alive without a touch of green. And a bookshelf is no exception.
Before I add any plant or botanical to my shelf, something always feels a little missing — like the styling is complete but not quite breathing yet. The moment I place even a small plant or a branch of dried botanicals, everything changes. The shelf suddenly feels warmer, softer and more real.
It doesn’t have to be complicated. A small potted plant tucked between books. A dried botanical arrangement in a simple vase. Even a single branch can be enough. Green connects your bookshelf to nature — and as we know, the more we bring nature into our home, the more alive and calm the whole space feels.
Don’t skip this step. It is small but it changes everything. 🌿

6. Add light — it changes everything about the atmosphere

I always wanted to add light to my bookshelf. But I had one problem — I didn’t want to make holes or run cables through it. So for a long time I did nothing, and the shelf looked beautiful in daylight but lost something in the evenings.

Then through a collaboration I received a portable lamp to style with — and the moment I placed it on the shelf and switched it on, I understood immediately what had been missing.

The warm, ambient glow it created was completely different from the ceiling light or the floor lamp across the room. It was intimate. It made the shelf feel like it had its own little world — the ceramics casting soft shadows, the plant coming alive in the warm light, the whole corner feeling suddenly cozy and intentional.

A portable lamp is one of the best investments you can make for your bookshelf — and your home. No cables, no drilling, no complicated installation. Just warm, beautiful light exactly where you want it. 🌿

7. Add something personal — because a house becomes a home through the stories it tells

style your bookshelf

A beautifully styled bookshelf can look stunning in a magazine. But what makes it truly yours is the personal touch — the objects that carry a memory, a feeling, a story that belongs only to your family.

I always display something personal on my bookshelf. A heritage book. A ceramic piece with meaning. A photograph. Something that when you look at it, reminds you of exactly who lives here and what matters to them.

Last Christmas my children gave my husband and me a set of framed photographs — of themselves and our dog. It sounds simple, but the thought behind it was anything but. They had worked so hard to find the perfect photos — especially one of our dog, caught in the most perfect moment, sitting upright in a chair like a little gentleman. It took them a long time to get that shot just right.

Those frames now sit on my bookshelf. And every single time I look at them, a smile comes to my lips.

That is what a personal touch does. It turns a beautiful shelf into your shelf. It turns a house into a home. 🌿

A final thought

A bookshelf is one of those rare pieces of furniture that is both completely practical and deeply personal at the same time. It holds your books, your objects, your memories — and when styled with intention, it can transform the whole atmosphere of a room.

You don’t need an expensive shelf or a perfectly curated collection of objects. You just need to start with purpose, connect it to your home, and add a little of yourself.

I hope this post inspires you to take a fresh look at your bookshelf — or perhaps finally make that decision you have been putting off. Sometimes the biggest change in a home comes from the most simple decision. 🤍

I would love to see your bookshelf! Share your photos with me in the comments or find me on Instagram — because there is nothing I enjoy more than seeing how other people make their space their own.
