5 Simple Steps to Create a Cozy Autumn Home with a Scandinavian Touch 🍂

In Denmark, the seasons don’t ease into each other gently. One week it is still summer — warm light, open windows, the garden full and green. And then, almost without warning, everything shifts. The air turns cooler, the light changes quality, the leaves begin to turn. Autumn arrives quickly and completely here.

And every year, when I feel that first real change in the air, something in me wants to respond. Not dramatically — not a full redecoration or a new sofa. Just a quiet reflection of what is happening outside, brought gently inside.

A warmer color in the textiles. A deeper, earthier candle scent. A branch of autumn leaves in a vase instead of summer flowers. Small changes that say: I see you, autumn. You are welcome here.

I believe deeply that when your home reflects the season you are living in — its colors, its mood, its particular quality of light — something settles inside you. A calm. A sense of being exactly where you should be. And in this post I want to show you how to create that feeling, with the simplest, most beautiful changes. 🍂

1. Start with textiles — the easiest way to change everything

If there is one change I always make when autumn arrives, it is this one. And it costs almost nothing.

I have had the same furniture in my living room for almost 15 years. The same sofa, the same chairs, the same wooden floor. And yet — almost every time family or friends visit, they look around and say: “Did you do something new in here?”

The answer is almost always no. I just changed the cushions. Or swapped the plaid on the sofa for something in a warmer, deeper tone. Sometimes I add a new one, but most of the time I simply rotate what I already have — pieces I have collected over the years that come back out each season like old friends.

That simple swap does something remarkable to a room. Suddenly the whole space feels like autumn. Warmer, softer, more settled.

For autumn I reach for deeper, earthier tones — warm terracotta, soft rust, rich brown, muted olive. Wool and linen rather than cotton. Heavier textures that invite you to curl up rather than stretch out. And when I combine these textiles with the other small changes I will show you in this post — the flowers, the candles, the light — the whole room transforms completely.

You don’t need new furniture. You just need to change what is on it. 🍂

2. Candles and scent — the invisible layer that changes everythingon

Scent has always had an important place in how I experience my home. It is the invisible layer of interior design — the one you cannot see but feel immediately when you walk through the door.

I use scent in different ways depending on the mood I want to create. Scented candles for the evenings, a diffuser that works quietly in the background during the day, essential oils when I want something very specific and controlled. Each one creates a slightly different atmosphere — but all of them working toward the same goal: a home that smells like somewhere you want to stay.

For me the most important thing is that the scent feels natural. Not too strong, not too perfumy — just a gentle, fresh presence that uplifts the mood without demanding attention. This is actually very much the Scandinavian approach to scent. Subtle, considered, connected to nature.

In autumn I shift toward deeper, earthier fragrances. Cedarwood. Sandalwood. A touch of amber. Sometimes cinnamon or clove — but always lightly, never overwhelming. These scents do something the eye cannot — they make the home feel like autumn even before you have changed a single cushion or lit a single candle.

Light a candle when the evenings arrive. Add a diffuser to a quiet corner. Let the scent of the season settle into your home. It is one of the smallest changes you can make — and one of the most powerful. 🍂

3. Bring nature inside — let the season speak through color

there is nothing that changes the mood of a home quite like flowers and greenery. Nothing. It is the simplest, most beautiful thing you can do — and it costs almost nothing when you have a garden to pick from.

I love having flowers or greenery in my home all year round. But in autumn I become very intentional about the colors I choose. Because the most effortless way to bring the autumn feeling inside is to simply mirror what is happening outside your window — the deep oranges, the warm burgundies, the soft rusts and golden yellows of the turning leaves.

When I can, I pick directly from the garden. A branch with the first autumn color. A handful of late-season greenery. Something that is literally from the world just outside my door — brought inside to connect the two. That simple act of picking something from your own garden and placing it in a vase is one of the most hyggeligt things you can do for your home.

And for those months when the garden has nothing left to offer — or when you want something that lasts longer than a week — good quality artificial flowers are a wonderful solution. A few months ago I bought some from a Danish brand and I still cannot quite believe they are not real. The quality of artificial botanicals today is remarkable — they last for years and look just as beautiful as the real thing.

A bowl of pinecones on the coffee table. A branch of colored autumn leaves in a tall vase. A bunch of dried flowers in a warm terracotta tone. Small things — but they bring the outside in, and with it that calm, connected feeling that only nature can give. 🍂

These touches instantly bring that autumn feeling indoors while adding a natural Scandinavian charm.

4.Consider a color refresh — if you are ready for a bigger change

I have always used natural, calm colors as the base of my home. Warm whites, soft neutrals, linen tones — colors that breathe and let everything else in the room do the talking. And for seasonal changes I usually rely on flowers, textiles and accessories to bring in the colors of the moment.

But a while ago I visited a showroom house that made me think differently about color. In every room they had painted just one wall — a single accent wall in a deeper, richer tone. Not the whole room. Just one wall. And the effect was remarkable. It gave each space a sense of depth and warmth without feeling heavy or overwhelming.

I have thought about it many times since. And I think autumn is actually the perfect season to try it — if you are ready for a slightly bigger change.

For autumn, consider deep terracotta, warm taupe, soft olive green, rich earthy brown or a muted burnt orange. These shades pair beautifully with natural wood, neutral walls and Scandinavian design elements. And if a full wall feels like too big a commitment — even a painted alcove, a single chimney breast or the wall behind a bookshelf can create that same beautiful effect.

You don’t have to repaint your whole home. Sometimes one wall is all it takes to make the season feel completely at home. 🍂

5. Light — the most underestimated part of an autumn home

cozy autumn home, light

As the days get shorter and darker in Denmark, light becomes one of the most important things in your home. Not just practically — but emotionally. The quality of light around you directly affects your mood, your energy and how your home feels to be in.

Autumn is actually the perfect time to look at your lighting with fresh eyes. Not just whether you have enough of it — but where it comes from, how it is layered, and whether it creates the warm, cozy atmosphere you are looking for.

I always think of light in layers. A ceiling light gives you function — but it is rarely what creates atmosphere. What really transforms a room is the smaller, softer lights. A floor lamp in the corner. A table lamp beside the sofa. A little glow on the bookshelf. Each one creates its own quiet pool of warmth that together make the whole room feel hyggeligt and alive.

One of my favourite ways to do this right now is with portable lamps. Cordless, beautiful and completely flexible — I move them around my home depending on where I want to create a moment. On the kitchen counter in the morning. On the sofa table in the evening. On the bookshelf when I want that warm amber glow against the ceramics and books.

Don’t wait until it is dark and you are already feeling the effect of the shorter days. Invest in your light now — at the beginning of autumn — and your home will carry you beautifully through the darker months ahead. 🍂
